Matters of the Heart

Writing about the current political process is a matter of the heart. Being passionate about politics is hardly ordinary, especially now. The mere fact that people talking politics is “ordinary” is extraordinary in and of itself! My Mother has never really given two cents about politics and this is the first time she’s been inspired to do anything. She’s 61 years old and believes that change is not only critical, but possible. More importantly, my Mom knows her voice must be heard and that her vote does indeed count. Tell me that’s not a matter of the heart. I hear stories like this all the time from people around the nation and it’s always extraordinary. Helping spread the word, sharing political passion and actually doing something about is definitely a matter of my heart, thank you very much.

    Michelle,

Do you really know that your mother never voted before this past election? Thats incredible. My parents voted in every presidential election from the time they could vote in the 30s until now. My 90 year old father voted early this past election season. I would never think of not voting in a presidential election. But you have a point, this year was different and people did seem to be more passionate about their candidate and there was certainly a greater turn out. I believe this happened for two reasons, the horrible state of the economy and the possibility of the first black president. There is no question that then Senator Obama played up the drama of his candidacy and inspired new voters to come out and vote. That was brilliant politicing. But the state of the economy and the distaste of any further war in the middle east also got people more engaged. Although I have not drank the Obama cool aid, I do think he ran a brilliant campaign and deserves the prize. Now it is time for him to lead just as brilliantly and for all who supported him to continue to be engaged in the political system and make sure he has their support to get his agenda moving forward.
